The Geodecity Project: 2009 Summer Retreat
12th June - 6th July 2009
GANGHUT @ Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Lumsden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Reactor have been invited by GANGHUT and SSW to undertake a one month residency at their base in rural Aberdeenshire. During this time Reactor will continue to develop The Geodecity Project by opening up a summer retreat to the Geodecian community. This will provide the project with its longest stay in one location, and the perfect opportunity to reflect on the first two years as well as undertaking an intensive forward-thinking programme: what is the future of the dome; the solar cooker; and the Utopia Geoffrey for the Geodecians?
As well as introspection, the Retreat will provide welcome opportunity for interaction with the Lumsden community with public activity focused on three weekends. This will include workshops with the local school to develop the Young Geodecian movement, a float, stall and events at the Lumsden Gala Day and a link up between the GANGHUT space in Lumsden and the GANGHUT show opening at Dundee Contemporary Arts. Members of the Geodecian community will be living on site for the duration of the Retreat with others invited to come and stay at any time, and for as long as they can escape for!

The Geodecity Project is an ongoing proposition, developing in collaboration with its participants through a variety of forms, media and locations, and exploring the relationship between utopic ideals and the reality of individuals working together to build communities. In August 2007, groups of pioneers travelled to a rural UK site and took part in a two day event combining survival exercise and future-visioning workshop. Staying overnight in the flat-pack geodesic domes they assembled, participants took this situation as a starting point: If this was to become the ideal 'future city', what decisions would need to be put in place now to ensure this fledgling utopia's survival? Following this event an online wiki was created; enabling Geodecians to further develop the rules, traditions and mythology of their new society. This experiment laid the foundations from which Geodecity grows, and its future will be shaped by the community's collective desires.
